Village theory

Posted: May 11, 2012 in Uncategorized

Anthropologists say that if you have too much experience, too early, you exhaust your capacity for further deep relationships. This may explain the superficiality often observed in those whose profession or circumstances for them to have a great number of relationships, such as salespeople, celebrities or those who move very frequently. The number of significant personal relationships is  remarkably similar for everyone, regardless of location, sophistication or culture.

A case example of a rehab project for young women who mixed with criminals, aimed to introduce the to new social backgrounds, basically to middle-class volunteers who befriended them and invited them to their homes. Many of these girls had been married at an early age and had their first children early too. Some had been married several times, had hundreds of lovers and had experienced the whole gamut of human experiences while still in their teens. The project was a total failure because the women were incapable of forming any deep new relationships. They were all used up. Their relationship slots had been filled, forever.

It also fits in with the 80/20 principle that a small number of your relationships will account for a large proportion of emotional value. Fill your relationship slots with extreme care and not too early.

Hi-5s at my workplace

I’ve actually seen a few groups attempting this same exact stunt at my workplace’s escalator already. While I do applaud the young volunteers for participating in such movements, I don’t impress easily, especially when I know these flash mob ideas are copied heavily from Improv Everywhere.

I sound moody probably because I’ve gone back (again) to reservist in army, sacrificing huge opportunity costs at work in doing so. However, an optimist once said that problems create opportunities and I shall keep an open mind even in the most negative of events.

Quarter life crisis

Posted: April 30, 2012 in Uncategorized

The ups and downs I’ve experienced this year thus far has started to put my life as-it-is into perspective again. A column in the newspapers today wrote about the ‘quarter life crisis’ which hits young adults as they start getting serious in their work or relationships, and start to ponder about whether what they’re doing is the right thing for them. Thus, many young adults are settling down much later, or quitting their jobs to go on year-long hiatus to find themselves or try something new ‘before it’s too late in their years’.

However, it seems that many people are taking the ‘finding myself’ experience wrongly. Some people simply take over-extended holidays overseas, which is not a bad thing but as someone who has done it before, I feel that it does nothing more than to let you relax and come back more refreshed. It’s very much different as saying fuck it and going off with only a backpack. Some people quit their well-paying jobs to open retail or F&B shops, which usually end up in a mess. Worse yet, some people I know are not doing anything with their lifes and just doing silly things hoping that one day the chips will fall in place and the stars will align for them.

Follow your dreams, successful people love to say. But life hits you with many hard truths along the way. Failed business deals, office politics, looming paycuts and other issues sum up the start of this year so far. I won’t admit that I’ve contemplated taking a step back and taking on life from another perspective. But then I realised today that I’ll just be like any other young adult with quarter life crisis, no?

I believe quarter life crisis hits everyone. The trick is not to dwell too long in it, because the most important part of your lives may just flash past you.

The Art of the Deal

Posted: April 23, 2012 in Uncategorized

There is just so much happening right now that I can’t even find time to update this journal sometimes.

The week started with an announcement of a potential pay cut and also a reshuffling within the department, where I was thrown a few rugs down the order. I had an IPO to deal with, trying to secure as much investor interest as possible. We had a new system to trial run and I was among the selected few. I also had to deal with a new batch of clients, along with pushing out a new promotional offer to them. At the rate this is going, the management might get what they want by forcing people to start quitting.

Because of this impending pay cut, I am forced to take drastic measures to ensure my survivability. This involves cutting deals, shady or not, with people whom I feel are beneficial. On the flipside, I stumbled across a new muse which involves a social networking/gaming website idea and also a side business with a friend in the supply chain industry.

I actually have a few things to write about, but maybe when the mess settles.

Cain’s Arcade

Posted: April 13, 2012 in Uncategorized

A nice short film about a very creative young boy who built simple games from cardboard and calls it his arcade, hoping to one day have many customers coming in to play his games. Raw creativity is something that is lacking as we mature into adults, so it’s really nice and warm to see a film like this.

How to succeed in China

Posted: April 7, 2012 in Uncategorized

My China experience was an interesting one. I got a chance to understand the childcare business and also learning how even something supposedly naive and simple minded like childcare centres can have so much politics involved.

As I walked around during my off-days and toured the neighbourhood around my hotel, I realised that it doesn’t take alot of genius to get rich in China. As a growing nation, everything is expanding and all it takes to do generate volume in your businesses. For example, you don’t need an innovative product or awesome marketing to succeed. Look at the landmarks of China. The reason why the terracotta armies or Great Wall of china were striking was because of its sheer sizes.

In developed countries like ours, we are already on the peak of growth and in order to succeed, we are required to be unique to stand out. I guess this sums up why there is so much hype about China being the land of opportunities.

Too manly for ladies night

Posted: March 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

There was an article in Sunday’s newspaper about women being refused entry into clubs on ladies nights. The article was careful about using words like butch or lesbians, and chose words like ‘androgynous’ to describe those women who were obviously lesbians and dressed like men.

As an entrepeneur, I’m in favour of businesses doing what they should in order to stay profitable. If nightclubs let in butches, this would be akin to allowing freeloaders in because the men (who are paying to enter) want as many hot women in the clubs as possible. I’m not condemning the minorities, be it gays or lesbians, but if you are attending such an event and got refused entry, be more understanding and stop throwing the fair rights bullshit.

Walk the walk and talk the talk. If lesbians are trying so hard to gain acceptance into society, the first thing they should do is being open minded about things. In this case, the nightclub is having a ladies night to attract men, so if I was a butch who wasn’t interested in men, I shouldn’t leech on the ‘ladies night’ free entry and pay for entry instead. Not only will this make things easier for club management, it also puts me in a good light because I’m understanding. I’m a butch and convey zero sex appeal to men, therefore I should not enjoy the free entry.

Score 1 for lesbian community for looking mature and understanding, no?

Kony video director arrested

Posted: March 18, 2012 in Uncategorized

Just a quick post this weekend to close up the Kony post I wrote earlier. Apparently, the director of the Kony 2012 video has just been arrested for allegedly being drunk, vandalizing cars and masturbating in public. Yup, that’s the kind of message you should send out after trying so hard to ‘defend’ yourselves over the purpose of the sensational video.  Also, this girl has an interesting post on the Kony issue particularly about slacktivism. I never knew such a word existed.

Now I know how to call people who try to join a cause and act like they give a damn.
